Nate Owen

Founder and Chief Executive Officer

Nate Owen is the chief visionary, evangelist, and driving force at Ampion. Nate founded Ampion in 2014, based on the conviction that the renewable energy revolution needed the same type of support that he previously created to facilitate the development of competitive electric and gas markets across the United States.

As the founder and CEO of ESG, Nate led efforts to establish data and business process standards in New England, New York, PJM, ERCOT, and California. His business served several thousand energy companies, including prominent retail energy companies, utilities, and major oil companies using market-leading CIS, CRMs and billing systems to acquire and service millions of customers. Nate brings unique and unparalleled experience and insight into the highly complex world of energy, data, and utilities. After selling ESG, Nate pivoted to supporting the renewable energy sector and founded Ampion in order to bring best-of-breed energy retailing systems and back-office support to renewable energy asset management.

Nate has a Bachelor's degree in Economics and Political Science from Bowdoin College. He is the proud father of three, enjoys cruising and racing his sailboat, playing basketball and following Boston sports.

Christopher Sullivan

Chief Technology Officer

Chris Sullivan is responsible for building out the platforms at the heart of the business. Chris joined Ampion in 2016, bringing over ten years of experience in nuclear and renewable power generation to the team. As a Nuclear Submarine Electrician in the U.S. Navy, he trained and led teams through generator, controller, and switchgear maintenance activities while operating the submarine's electric plant. Following that, as a hydro operator, he remotely operated eighty hydroelectric facilities, totaling approximately 750 MW.

While managing a world class SCADA platform, Chris successfully commissioned a new centralized control center for approximately one hundred generation assets and subsequently integrated an additional thirty hydroelectric and wind facilities. He was responsible for site communications and data quality for real-time operations, totaling near 3,000 MW of generation across the U.S. Additionally, he led efforts to establish real-time data exchanges between the control center and New England ISO, NYISO, PJM, California ISO, and several utilities operating in each RTO.

Just prior to joining Ampion, Chris worked in software development, managing cloud infrastructure and release engineering. Working closely with development and support teams to improve customer satisfaction, he led efforts to increase system uptime, application availability, network security, and release quality. Today he is actively promoting DevOps practices in Engineering and Agile philosophy throughout the organization.

Chris has a Bachelor's degree in Information Technology, with a Minor in Business, from the University of Massachusetts Lowell. He enjoys playing golf and volleyball, and watching Bruins hockey.

Stephen Grinder

VP of Operations

Steve has overall responsibility for Operations at Ampion, including Professional Services, Product Management, Policy & Regulation, and Customer Service. Steve joined Ampion at the beginning of 2018, bringing more than twenty-five years of experience from large high tech companies, six successful high tech start-ups, as well as his own management consulting firm.

This hands-on experience combined with his passion for business and innovation with both large (3Com, HP, Bay Networks) and small (PrismHR, Permessa, Trinagy) tech companies has allowed Steve to rebuild, strengthen, and optimize groups and processes, particularly in the areas of business process and operations, product management, product development, quality assurance, customer support, and marketing.  Of the six small firms Steve has worked with, three received the additional funding they were seeking, one had a successful IPO, and four were strategically marketed and successfully sold.

As a management consultant, Steve worked with Philips, LocatePlus, Beth Israel Deaconess Hospital and the Commonwealth of Massachusetts on management efficiency, business process, and program management.  His work with Philips Healthcare in researching, recommending, and implementing an ECM document workflow project automated the receipt, distribution, fulfillment, and storage of all enrollment documents. This project converted a cumbersome manual process into a fully automated, compliant, and scalable document workflow system which converted a department from a 1:20 ratio of staff:enrollments to a 1:100 ratio, saving Philips $950K in the first two years.

Steve graduated from Lehigh University Bachelor’s degree in a double major (Computer Science and Marketing). He is a die-hard Boston sports fan (Sox, Patriots, Celtics and Bruins), enjoys playing golf, and is a serious foodie.

Edward Son

VP Business Development

Ed has overall responsibility for Business Development at Ampion, including Customer and Client Service, Sales, and Product Development. Ed joined Ampion in 2016, endowing the team with a varied background in utilities, retail energy, and software. Ed is a former U.S. Navy Nuclear Lieutenant, having served aboard a Nimitz-class aircraft carrier and navy frigate.

Ed later moved into retail energy and management consulting industries, providing expertise and support to utilities, retailers, and Fortune 500 financial institutions. He has extensive experience in strategy, product management, software development, risk management, and data science analytics. Most recently, Ed was new product manager for an energy retailer working on strategic initiatives and product launches. He was also previously a project manager and business analyst for software development applications for a retail supplier.

As a management consultant, Ed worked with multiple electric utilities, energy providers, and financial institutions, having led multiple strategic initiatives, software implementations, business processes, and analyses.

Ed has a Bachelor's in Chemical Engineering with a Math Minor from the University of Pennsylvania. He holds an MBA in Finance & Strategy from Boston University, and is PMP qualified. Ed enjoys art and playing soccer. He is an FC Barcelona and World Cup soccer fan, and occasionally sails. Now in Boston, he enjoys his status as a lifelong Yankees fan, and suffering through Knicks and Jets games.  

Alejandro Abogado

VP Sales and Marketing

Alejandro Abogado has been with Ampion since its inception in 2015 and he relocated to the Boston area from San Francisco in 2017 to lead Ampion’s Sales Team.

As a core team member, he assisted in the development of the early-stage software platform by translating customer needs into the product roadmap.

Prior to Ampion, he co-founded a commercial construction start-up. As head of sales, Alejandro imparted his entrepreneurial spirit to transform the company into a top tier Bay Area service provider for over a decade.

During his tenure at Ampion, Alejandro has developed an in-depth knowledge of the renewable energy industry and the customer’s needs in a complex and evolving industry.

Alejandro studied Communications at Boston University as well as Sustainable Architecture at the San Francisco Institute of Architecture (SFIA). He is environmentally conscious and passionate about building strong customer relationships with Ampion’s clients. In his spare time he enjoys travel, motorsport, and sailing.

Peter Kelly-Detwiler


Peter has been with Ampion since its inception, working with Nate Owen to develop the initial concept for the company.

Over his career of twenty-eight years in energy, Mr. Kelly-Detwiler has held a series of executive positions, including SVP of Constellation Energy’s Demand Response unit, overseeing a business that ultimately grew to 1,700 MW of dispatchable load and annual revenues exceeding eighty million dollars. He also ran Constellation Energy’s New England Operations unit, taking that retail energy business unit from zero to over one billion dollars in annual revenues.

Peter is a Principal at NorthBridge Energy Partners. He currently provides strategic consulting to a variety of companies with a focus on integrating new technologies into the evolving electric power grid. Recent clients have ranged from start-ups to well-established multinational energy holding companies.

Mr. Kelly-Detwiler is a frequent keynote speaker, workshop presenter, and panel moderator at various energy conferences. He is also a frequent contributor to and other publications, having written over 250 energy-related pieces in the past four years.

Peter is currently working on a book addressing the topic of innovation and disruption in the electric power industry.  Peter has a Bachelor’s degree in German Literature from Williams College and a Masters in Development Economics from the Tufts Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy.

In spare time, Peter rows on the ocean and terrorizes fish from his rowing shell.
